SMB Nation recently heard from Mr. Steve Hilton, Principal Analyst at Analysys Mason regarding his top three “hots” and “nots” for the M2M and Internet of Things in 2013. Please see below for his list.
According to Mr. Hilton, 2013 is shaping up to be very exciting for the M2M/IoT space. His top three “Hots” include:
- “Connected Cars”: Mr. Hilton explained that cars are set to feature better diagnostics modules, insurance and security programs and management/tracking functionality.
- More collaboration between operators: According to Mr. Hilton, we can expect to see a general peace in the M2M operator niche.
- Improvement in variety and number of M2M/IoT connections: This “hot” is based on the industry trend of refining and fostering innovation in the space.
Mr. Hilton’s “nots” include:
- Unnecessary M2M and IoT products: With the surge in innovation, Mr. Hilton warns against going overboard with technology that is good in practice, but has no real-world application.
- Inflexible pricing and connectivity-only plans: Mr. Hilton encourages mobile network operators to bundle other services with their current connectivity options to foster better customer satisfaction.
- Lackluster Partner Involvement: Mr. Hilton predicts that in 2013, vendors and operators will begin to filter out the partners that aren’t delivering customers.
