Earlier today, IDC released its latest Government Insight findings in a report titled: “Business Strategy: Government Mobility Forecast, 2014-2017.” In this report, IDC predicts that mobility will start to see growth in state and local govermnents, with the highest rate falling between 2013 and 2015. In addition, this growth is expected to come primarily from citizen demand, followed by employee requests for convenience.
Key findings from this report include:
- Current market share for smartphones, tablets and eReader spending is 5% of overall government budget.
- In 2017, IDC expects nearly 8% growth of eReaders at the local government level.
- Mobility vendors will aim to provide best-practices and consultations for government industries in the time frame of 2014-2017.
- The wireless voice market is expected to decline by 6.9%, while the wireless data sector is expected to grow by 10.2%
“The mobile market in government is quite healthy," explained Shawn McCarthy, Research Director at IDC Government Insights. "Smartphones and services lead this sector, but the demand for tablet computers is ramping up, and we expect double-digit growth in tablet spending to reach the local levels of government in a big way by 2017.”
