McAfee, Office Depot Survey Find False Sense of Security in SMB Space

mfe primary logo rgb.smallMcAfee recently released the findings of a survey conducted jointly with Office Depot on SMB security perceptions. The survey, conducted in September 2013, found that 66% of the 1000 SMBs polled said that they felt confident about the security of their data and devices, while 77% said that they had never been hacked.

According to McAfee, these results are greatly at odds with the current industry findings. In particular, a Verizon Communications report found that 72% of attacks were aimed at companies with less than 100 employees. The discrepancy can be explained by two phenomena. One is that SMBs cyber-attacks are rarely covered in the news, and the other is that most SMBs may not even know that they have been attacked.

Additional findings showed that 14% of SMBs have not implemented any kind of security measures, while about 50% use internet security and less than 50% use e-mail security. When it came to BYOD procedures, only 9% of those polled replied that they use mobile or endpoint security. 45% of SMBs don’t even secure company data on personal devices.
