The OpenPOWER Foundation is celebrating its one-year anniversary today. This organization, which features a not-for-profit community, is dedicated to the development of open source server technology. Over the past year, this organization has seen membership increase from 5 founding companies, to 80 organizations worldwide, including IT companies and universities. OpenPOWER most recently welcomed Avnet and Rackspace to its membership for the year.
"We’re very excited with what we’ve accomplished over the past year, not just in terms of our expanding roster, but as measured by our ability to tap into the unique talents each member brings to our growing community of innovators," said OpenPOWER Chairman Gordon MacKean, in a recent press release. ”We wanted to make OpenPOWER a community where industry leaders could easily leverage one another's capabilities and technology to address the performance bottlenecks of today’s servers.”
OpenPOWER members have been busy in 2014. 12 members are currently designing OpenPOWER systems, and university members are utilizing OpenPOWER-developed tech to conduct research. In addition, OpenPOWER has chartered six work groups throughout 2014, including the latest, which is focused on server interoperability. Looking forward to 2015, OpenPOWER is planning to host the first-ever community summit at the San Jose Convention Center in California. This is currently slated for March 17-19, 2015.
