Today, Western Digital announced the availability of their new 3.5 inch SAS Hard Drive solution. The WD XE has been designed as a transitional hard drive for datacenters looking to migrate away from legacy devices.
Western Digital explained that this new device is a 2.5 inch hard drive housed in a 3.5 inch mount, which is designed to run cooler and fit into legacy systems. The WD XE can run on up to 67% less power than legacy devices, while holding up to 50% more data. There are currently a few options available, based on sizes from 300 GB to 900 GB, all of which feature 6 GB/s transfer rates. In addition, the recording head features the company’s “No Touch ramp load” technology, which reduces wear and tear.
